English lessons at Blandford St Mary Primary School are full of a variety of activities, which all form part of either reading, writing, speaking or listening.
The single most important thing that you can do as a parent to help your child, is to read stories to them and show them how important and enjoyable the skill of reading is. Reading is for information and pleasure. Without being able to read, school becomes a much trickier place.
As well as reading stories to them, hear your child read! Reading out loud to a parent/carer 3 times a week has an almost unbelievable effect on reading progress. Even fluent readers need to be heard reading - as they come across new and unfamiliar language you can hep them acquire those words into their vocabulary by explaining them.
This is why we insist on reading, why we are proud to insist on it as part of a daily routine.
World Book Day 2018
Thanks to the very beautiful snow, we had to postpone World Book Day, until we were back in school this week. The children put in a magnificent effort and brought in Shelfie pictures, Book Reviews, dressed-up potatoes and themselves and we had a wonderful assembly where we had a chance to admire the costumes.
