Welcome to Year 4 - Morpurgo Base!
Welcome to Morpurgo Base class page. On this page you will be able to see what we have been learning about in Year 4.
There will be links and ideas for things to do to help you continue learning at school and at home.
We were very proud this week in year 4 as Amaelia and Grace were both recognised for their work, designing a new logo for the parish of Blandford St Mary. Three members of the Parish Council attended our Celebration Assembly and awarded the prizes. Amaelia's first place design will become the logo for future publicity of our area.
Learning from the experts!
Today we enjoyed an exciting day of science investigation led by Mr Forbes, an engineer from Wessex Water.
First, we impressed him with our knowledge of the water cycle. Then he explained how humans intervene in this process to collect, clean, treat and send water to our houses.
Our first investigation was to identify which of three samples of water was rain water, tap water or water from a swimming pool. We conducted tests to find the acidity, the hardness and the chlorine content in each sample. With this information we were able to conclude where each sample came from.
Book Day in Morpurgo Base!
There was a definite feeling of "It's Good to be Me" in Morpurgo Base today!
Firstly, we all dressed up as our favourite characters, then we watched a film clip of Michael Morpurgo reading his own story, 'Coming Home'. Miss Dixon read us another Michael Morpurgo book called Rainbow Bear, where a polar bear comes to realise how important and special he is in his icy wonderland. Mrs. W. then shared her story about a giraffe who felt sad because he couldn't dance like everyone else, but learned to dance in his own special way.
We wrote book reviews, went on a book scavenger hunt and created our own bookmarks. We really enjoyed our day of reading!
We have read the story of Beowulf and Grendal. We used the story to inspire our own mythical creatures that have featured in our own viking style legends.
Here are some photos to show what Morpurgo Base have been doing at the start of Autumn term.
Using story maps to retell fables.
Making pizzas to start our topic - 'How I work'. The question was to do with what happens after we've eaten the pizza?!
We found out all about the digestive system and how our bodies take nutrients from our food to make them work effeiciently.
We have been beginning to learn the guitar.
We've had a lesson each week and are starting to make some good sounds!
Learning about 'Secrets to success'. We have thought about what makes a good learner and are always aiming to employ the eight secrets to success in our learning.
This week we have made string telephones.
We had great fun testing them out!
We found that sound travels along the string and the cans amplify the sound. If someone holds the string the vibration is blocked and the sound can't get through. If the string is slack it can't vibrate and again the phone won't work.
We also found the bigger the cans the better the sound!
We found that the cardboard and the fabric muffled the sound best.
